Chester Sofas and the 4th Earl of Chesterfield

According to recent research it is believed the term Chesterfield was given for the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Lord Philip Stanhope, who ordered a piece of elegant but comfortable furniture within the 18th century. Apparently Philip Stanhope ordered a leather Chesterfield Sofa known for its distinguishing deep buttoned and quilted upholstery.
Lord Philip was known throughout the century as a much-admired politician alongside a well-known author, as a result he became a trendsetter.
Lord Phillip Stanhope wished for a piece of furniture to be built that would offer a gentleman luxury and comfort. His requests demanded a sofa that would allow him to sit upright without wrinkling his garment whilst providing utmost comfort. This is the original purpose behind why British Chesterfield sofas were designed to have deep buttoned upholstery, equal heights for the arm and back and the nail head trim.
Over the last 200 years Chesterfield has become of the most popular and iconic pieces of furniture in the world. Chesterfield sofas are well known for providing high-end interior and elegance to homes. Throughout recent years Chesterfield sofas have made significant changes to meet consumer needs. There have been a variety of styles and designs introduced from sizes to covers. However the main characteristics of the sofa still largely remain to this day.

The Modern Day Chesterfield Design

Originally, the chesterfield design was upholstered in leather, but it was not necessary that way. In fact, softer fabric was also available and in the earlier part of the 20th century, the genuine leather for the chesterfield sofas became a distinctive mark of status and quality. Manufacturers of luxury seating realized that most popular and expensive pieces of furniture have to be constructed in genuine leather. This trend thus continued throughout the years to the modern day chesterfield sofa designs.
All of the models and colour schemes that follow since the chesterfield sofa was created have all been directly influenced by the original design over the past 200 years. Since 200 years ago, it has graced the royal palaces, hotels, restaurants, prominent office and luxurious homes. With that it became synonymous to style and elegance all throughout the world, a status symbol of the elite and most definitely one of the most sought-after addition in modern day home and business offices. With its refinement and elegance, the British Chesterfield sofa is sure to still be in-demand in the centuries to come.
